Apex Bionic Softshell

The Apex Bionic from The North Face is a blend of all the desirable elements in a althetic jacket: warmth, comfort, water-resistance, stretchability, breathability, and aesthetics. How does it do it?

Apex ClimateBlock Exterior, Fleece Interior

The exterior "shell" is made out of TNF's proprietary Apex ClimateBlock fabric. It is stretchable, soft and comfortable to the touch, water resistant, and 100% windproof. Despite its impermeability to natural elements, Apex Bionic allows excess moisture escape. The interior of the jacket is lined by fleece fabric, which retains body heat. The result is that you will stay warm and dry in a variety of environments. And don't worry, the Apex Bionic moderates heat very well. You will not overheat indoors with this jacket on.

Pockets, Hem Cinch-Cord, Velcro Cuffs

The two pockets on the sides and a Napoleon-style pocket on the left chest give you plenty of places to stash keys, cell phone, and ipod. Each is secured by a zipper so nothing ever gets lost. The hem cinch cord at the bottom allows you to lock in body heat when it gets really cold. Although the Velcro cuffs are supposed to do the same, we find them to be a bit useless compared to the rest of the jacket's features.

Temperature Range and Performance

The Apex Bionic is extremely versatile. It can be worn indoors or outdoors from room temperature to below freezing. With normal clothing underneath, the jacket can keep warm down to the high 20°s. Because the Apex Bionic is water resistant, breathable, and warm, it also a thermal layer of choice under extremely cold and wet conditions.

Several people in the past had mentioned that the Apex Bionic sleeves are on the long side. We think that this design is intentional as the long sleeves allow you to hide your hands in extremely cold weather. The Velcro cuffs should be used if you'd like your sleeves to be tight around your wrists.
